Beaches & Sunbathing

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach can be found by following Southard Street through the Truman Annex checkpoint then follow the signs along the lane to the beach and fort. There is a small per person charge for entry and a car parking fee if you take your car. There are bathrooms there and a light refreshment stand. It is a family oriented State Park open from 10:00 a.m. until sunset, where you can enjoy swimming, sunning and snorkeling (With your own equipment). Beach chairs are available for hire. The entrance fee includes a tour of the historic Civil War fort, which is open every day.
Fees: $1.50 - non car user. $2.50 - car user. $5.00 - for 2 or more people in the car. Fee includes tour of the fort.

Smathers Beach is on the way to the airport. This is the place to go for volleyball and you can also enjoy parasailing, jet skiing, and wind surfing. The beach is long and narrow and the water is shallow close to the beach. A great place for children, with vendor trucks and carts along the roadside.

Higgs Beach is at the end of White Street. It is much smaller than Smathers Beach and does not have access to water sports. Otherwise the facilities are similar, with grills available for some self cooked snacks.

Atlantic Shores Resort is a favorite for just sunbathing and hanging out (literally), if you are here without children. It has a very large deck with a pool, great music, full bar, grill bar and a small pier with steps down into the Atlantic Ocean. A sun lounger bed is just $3.00 per day and there is usually pool side cocktail service in the afternoon. This is one of the few places on the island where you may nude sunbathe if you so wish. Beach towels and parasailing are also available.

Gable (Dog) Beach This is located next to Louie's Backyard Restaurant on the corner of Vernon Street and Waddell Avenue.
